M&E lists our favorite Latina Style Icons below:
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Carolina Herrera is among the world’s most respected and idolized fashion designers. In the 1980s, Herrera was considered one of the best dressed women in the world, and a muse for modern artists such as Andy Wahrol (who portrayed her in his famous style in 1983.) After more than 20 years, her company continues to grow and innovate, dressing elegant women around the world.
Sophistication, elegance, and emotion are some of the most important characteristic traits of Carolina Herrera’s style.
Puerto Rican Actress and singer Jennifer Lopez is a leading lady who’s forged a successful pop and dance music career. Born and raised in The Bronx, her style is sexy/flirty; she’s known for wearing plunging necklines, and dresses that are cinched at the waist to accentuating her famous curves. Who could forget the exotic green Versace dress she wore to the Grammy’s in 2000?
Selma Hayek is a Mexican actress, director, and producer. She began her career participating in Telenovelas in Mexico, successfully crossing over into film with her role in Frida. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including a Best Actress nomination for Hayek, who was the first Latin actress to be nominated in the category. You can always count on this Mexican actress to look sexy and sophisticated for any red carpet event… We loved her in this Alexander McQueen velvet gown at the 2013 Oscars.
Vergara was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, and began her career in modeling, before moving to television as a hostess. She was featured in several films in the U.S before landing a role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in the ABC series Modern Family. Vergara is the only Hispanic actress who began her career in a U.S. Hispanic Network and successfully crossed over to the general market. We love her not only because she beautiful, stylish and fun, but because she has made history in the entertainment industry.
Longoria was born in Corpus Christi, Texas. A beauty pageant contestant in her youth, Longoria got her first break in show business with a regular role on The Young and the Restless between 2001-2003. Her breakthrough role came in 2004 as Gabrielle Solis on the hit television series Desperate Housewives. Longoria loves glitz and glamour, and is known for wearing beautiful statement gowns (often with long trains) which we absolutely adore! She also keeps her wardrobe and style interesting by occasionally trading her long flowy gowns for more risqué dresses. She always surprises us!
Saldana is an American-born actress with a Dominican father and Puerto Rican mother. She began her career as a trained dancer, and later transitioned into acting. Saldana’s breakthrough came in the 2000 film Center Stage, and she later gained attention for her roles as Anamaria in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl; Uhura in the 2009 film Star Trek, and Neytiri in James Cameron’s Avatar. Seldana’s a constant figure on best dressed lists; she she loves dramatic designs and low-cut backs, and she isn’t afraid to experiment with her style.
Nina Garcia is from Barranquilla, Colombia, and is currently the Creative Director at Marie Claire magazine. She is best know for her role as a formidable fashion judge on the Peabody-Award-winning show, Project Runway. Garcia’s style is classic and structural; she loves clean lines and interesting, modern details.
Puerto Rican native Joan Smalls was recently ranked as the “No. 1 Model” by Models.com. Smalls is currently signed to IMG Model Management, and has been been featured on a plethora of magazine covers internationally. Her sultry, sophisticated, and edgy style is not to miss. She is often spotted rocking leather; pants, jackets and even shorts. Smalls is fashion’s “It” girl for the moment— breaking barriers, taking fashion weeks by the storm, and making Latinas all over the world very proud.
